How to Get Your Tech Stack Ready Before the Q4 Rush

hand stacking tech blocks

Q4 is coming. If your business has a busy season, it probably starts in October. And the worst time to discover your systems can’t handle the load is the Tuesday before Thanksgiving when everything is running at full speed.

The Q4 Surge Exposes Whatever You Didn’t Fix in Q3

Every year it’s the same story. The file server that’s been running slow since July completely gives up in October. The outdated laptop that was “good enough” fails during the week with the biggest client deadline of the year. The email filtering that never got properly configured starts blocking legitimate vendor communications right when you need them most.

These aren’t random equipment failures. They’re deferred problems that were waiting for pressure to surface. And Q4 provides plenty of pressure.

The average cost of unplanned IT downtime for an SMB is $8,600 per hour. During peak season, that number gets worse — because the cost isn’t just the IT fix, it’s the revenue you didn’t capture while your systems were down.

The September Tech Readiness Checklist

Five things to address in September so you’re not dealing with them in November.

1. Performance review. Run a load test on your critical systems. How does your network perform with 20% more users active? Is there a single point of failure that a busy October could expose?

2. Hardware triage. Walk the office (or have someone do it for you). Any machine that’s 5+ years old is a liability. A new workstation costs $1,200. A week of downtime during Q4 costs far more.

3. Cloud and storage capacity. If your file storage is at 80%+ capacity, you’re one busy month from hitting a wall. Add capacity now, when there’s no pressure.

4. Communication tools. Test your VoIP, video conferencing, and collaboration platforms. If half the team is remote during the holidays, do those tools hold up?

5. Vendor SLAs. Call your IT provider and confirm: what is your guaranteed response time in October and November? If the answer is vague, that’s information.
